What to Know Before Renting a Student Room in Paris
How to read the rent, verify the apartment and the provider, and understand what you pay online versus at check-in.
Know exactly what the rent covers
The first question is not how much the rent is, but what it replaces. A cheap room with separate electricity, heating, internet and cleaning can cost more than an all-inclusive one. Compare the total monthly cost of living in the room, using the list of inclusions written on the page you are booking from.
Understand every amount before you commit
Booking a room through Jump In means paying the first month of rent online, plus a Booking Service Fee of 3% of that first month of rent plus €0.25, shown separately before you pay. The administrative fee and the security deposit are not charged online: you pay them at check-in to your City Manager, and the deposit is returned after check-out under the conditions in your agreement. Amounts are set per room and per city and are always displayed before you confirm.
If a payment schedule for your dates is not shown to you before you pay, that is a reason to stop and ask.
Check the apartment, not only the room
You will spend a lot of your time in the shared spaces. Look at how many rooms the apartment has, which shared spaces exist, what the house rules say, and which floor it is on. Those details are recorded on the property and shown on each room page of that apartment.
Check who is letting the room
You should always know the identity of the party you are contracting with before money moves. On Jump In the independent local accommodation provider is identified on the room page before payment and named in the rental agreement; Jump In's own role as the booking platform is stated in the same place.
Get the dates right
Confirm the earliest date the room is free and whether your intended departure lines up with the agreement. Each room page shows its availability, and where a room is currently taken, the next free period is shown so you can request it for a later date instead of guessing.
Jump In is the booking platform: it publishes the rooms, reviews requests, prepares the rental agreement and collects the first month of rent online. The accommodation itself is provided by the independent local accommodation provider identified before you pay and named in the agreement you sign.
